Breast Augmentation in the Vancouver Area

Facial Plastic Surgery in Vancouver and Richmond BC

what is facial aging?

The process of facial aging is complex, but there are just three main characteristics that determine how old we appear:

  1. Skin deterioration
  2. Deflation
  3. Sagging

What determines when and how fast we age?

Internal factors, such as our genetics, and external factors, such as sun exposure and smoking, impact when this process becomes noticeable as well as the severity and proportion of the above three aging characteristics.

How does aging effect facial expression?

Even at rest, each person's face suggests an emotion and as we age, the emotion is more often one of sadness, melancholy, worry, fatigue or anger and it may not correlate at all with the way we actually feel. These unwanted expressions often originate from our appearance around the eyes and mouth. That's part of the reason why effective, natural rejuvenation in these areas is so important to restoring a youthful look.

What are the goals of facial rejuvenation? How do we keep the results natural? I'm afraid of doing too much?

Facial rejuvenation should provide a natural correction of the aging process without exaggeration or disproportion. Dr. Reid will help you identify which age-related changes you are demonstrating and your options for treatment. Often, natural results are most easily obtained by combining treatments and making small improvements all over rather than over-using a single treatment or over-treating a particular area of the face.

How has our understanding of aging changed?

Facial rejuvenation used to be limited to operations that tightened skin, resected fat or both. We now understand the aging process better and in particular the importance of atrophy, or volume loss. A youthful attractive face does not have hollow eyes or flat cheeks; nor is it tight. Therefore, facial rejuvenation should restore volume and address any sagging without creating tightness.

If we are losing volume in certain areas of the face as we age, how do we replace it?

Volume loss is an important component of the aging process and results in easily recognizable hallmarks of aging such as hollow upper eyelids, sunken temples and thin lips. Our best options for re-volumizing these areas are injectable fillers and micro fat grafting.

Treatment of wrinkles and fine lines

Mild to moderate superficial wrinkles and Fine lines can form on specific areas of the face such as around the eyes (known as crow's feet), on the forehead, or between the eyebrows. These are known as dynamic wrinkles that become permanent over time with repeated facial expressions. BOTOX® Cosmetic works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles thereby minimizing the appearance of wrinkles.

Surgical Options

As the facial skin loses its elasticity with age, we begin to notice a "sagging" of the face. This sagging is usually most pronounced on the cheeks and at the jaw line (jowls). When the sagging cannot be treated with non-surgical options, a facelift may be needed. Dr. Reid will recommend a treatment plan appropriate for the level of correction that your desire at the time of your consultation.

What is Micro Fat Grafting?

This treatment involves the removal of excess fat by liposuction from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, hips or thighs which by itself provides some cosmetic benefit. The fat is carefully prepared before it is transferred in to target areas. The fat is injected in small quantities through micro-cannulas.

What makes fat the ideal filler for facial rejuvenation?

Replacing lost soft-tissue volume with your own fat couldn't be more natural. Micro-fat grafting results in a soft, natural appearance and feel. Micro Fat Grafting provides a sustained improvement that ages naturally. There is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection, problems which have complicated other permanent fillers.

Can Micro Fat Grafting be used to enhance my facial shape and proportions?

Many patients are not seeking rejuvenation but rather a change in one or more facial features - a weak chin for example. In the past, creating ideal facial proportions and balance used to require surgical facial implants or orthagnathic surgery. Micro Fat Grafting now provides a lessinvasive alternative in these clinical situations.

I'm not sure what treatment is best for me?

The process begins with a consultation in our Richmond office. Dr. Reid will listen to your concerns and answer your questions. A standardized set of clinical photographs are taken after which you and Dr. Reid will review the photos and discuss his findings and recommendations. If your goal is to look younger, it's very helpful to bring an old photo of yourself to the consultation.

Will I have the option to choose what treatment(s) I would like to proceed with?

Dr. Reid will present to you a personalized, comprehensive treatment plan; however, we understand that you may not be able to proceed with this treatment for a variety of reasons. If this is the case, we will work within your constraints to amend the treatment plan and provide a practical alternative.

Where do the treatments take place?

Some treatments are available in the office and others require a private surgical facility. Dr. Reid operates at a private surgery centre in Vancouver.
