Breast Reduction in Vancouver and Richmond Area

Breast Reduction in Vancouver and Richmond Area

What is breast reduction?

Overly large breasts can often create issues not only with aesthetics but with mobility and overall comfort. Many women are discovering the advantages of decreasing their breast size with the help of plastic surgery. Dr. Owen Reid offers breast reduction surgery for women in the Vancouver area who desire a more manageable breast size and, consequently, a more youthful appearance.

Breast Reduction Benefits

Breast reduction isn't just about making big breasts smaller or creating a particular cup size. It's about achieving an overall balance between breast size and body type. Women who choose this procedure are often hoping for a breast size and shape that complement their overall figure. In many cases, women opt for breast reduction to alleviate the discomfort and lifestyle limitations commonly associated with large breasts. Benefits of breast reduction include:

  • Improved proportions between breast and body
  • Breasts that are more symmetrical
  • Alleviation of bra strap grooves, back and shoulder pain, and other physical consequences of abnormally large breasts
  • Increased ability to exercise and engage in other activities that overly large breasts can make difficult or even impossible

How does breast reduction work?

During your consultation, Dr. Reid will listen to your goals for breast reduction surgery, as well as your concerns. He will determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure. If so, he will work with you to form a surgical plan that best fits your needs. He will guide you through the process of choosing the optimal breast size and profile for your frame.

In most cases, this operation takes place in the hospital. However, it is an option to have your breast reduction in a private surgical facility. During the procedure, you will be asleep under a general anaesthetic. The operation takes about 2 hours, and in most cases patients are discharged home the same day. When you wake up, your comfort will be maintained by the freezing medication Dr. Reid injects during the surgery.

Dr. Reid achieves the reduction itself by removing excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts via a combination of direct excision and liposuction. In addition to decreasing breast size, this procedure will lift and re-shape the breasts resulting in a firmer breast with a more youthful appearance.

Liposuction is an important adjunct to breast reduction surgery and enhances the result by defining the lateral border of the breast and, when necessary, removing excess fat from the side of the chest.

In many cases, women choose to have liposuction of other areas or a tummy tuck at the time of their breast reduction. If you think that you might benefit from these procedures don’t hesitate bring it up for discussion during your breast reduction consultation.

All breast reduction procedures include some form of breast lift.

Breast Reduction Recovery

Dr. Reid performs breast reduction on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return home after your surgery. You should arrange to have a friend or loved one drive you to and from your procedure, as well as care for you during the first few days of your recovery.

Dr. Reid uses dissolvable sutures during breast reduction surgery. He does not use drains. He will examine your surgery site at a follow-up appointment 2-3 days after your procedure.

You will likely experience some degree of pain for a few days, as well as swelling and/or bruising. Dr. Reid can prescribe medication to alleviate any discomfort. Breast reduction patients should plan to rest for at least a few days, and some time off work is usually required. To ensure a smooth recovery, avoid strenuous exercise for 2-3 weeks.

Breast Reduction Safety Considerations

Breast reduction surgery is one of the most common plastic surgery operations, in part because the satisfaction rate is high and the complication rates are low. However, there are some risks you should be aware of. As a routine part of the consultation, Dr. Reid will discuss important considerations including: nipple sensation, breastfeeding, breast cancer screening, scar placement, asymmetry and surgical limitations. He will also review your risk for other rare surgical complications such as: bleeding, infection, poor scarring and slow wound healing.

Breast Reduction Fees

If you have symptomatic breast hypertrophy, your surgery will be provided as a benefit of our provincial health insurance plan (this also applies to patients from the Yukon Territory, whom we commonly see). Additional fees are applicable for liposuction or a tummy tuck performed at the same time. A quote will be provided at the time of your consultation, or you are welcome to phone the office for more information.
