MOLE REMOVAL IN THE VANCOUVER AREA

WHAT ARE MOLES?

In most cases, moles are harmless skin growths that are symmetrically shaped and consistently coloured. They may occur as birthmarks or manifest themselves during childhood or even adulthood. Moles result from groups of skin cells with more pigment than surrounding cells. Therefore, exposure to sunlight can cause the appearance of moles. It is often these moles that may be cause for medical concern. Dr. Owen Reid offers mole removal for Vancouver area men and women who are concerned about aesthetics and/or medical safety.

WHY ARE MOLES REMOVED?

Many people choose to have moles removed for cosmetic reasons, hoping to achieve a more uniform complexion. However, mole removal is often necessary as a safeguard against skin cancer. Changes in a mole’s appearance over time are the main signs that it may require removal for medical reasons. This may include changes in:

  • Colour
  • Diameter
  • Projection (height above the skin)
  • Shape - especially in asymmetrical moles

You should also seek medical attention for moles that bleed or feel overly tender.

HOW DOES MOLE REMOVAL OCCUR?

Your mole removal procedure will occur under local anesthesia. Dr. Reid may opt to excise your mole surgically or employ a minimally invasive technique using electricity. All of our mole removal procedures occur on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return home following your procedure.

WHAT WILL MY RECOVERY BE LIKE?

Dr. Reid will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your mole removal site following your procedure. Mole removal requires no downtime, and you will be able to return to your normal routine soon after your procedure. Mole removal can sometimes result in scabbing and discomfort, both of which will dissipate after a few days. You may need to avoid exposing the removal site to direct sunlight for a few days to a few weeks.
