GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY IN VANCOUVER

MALE BREAST REDUCTION

The development of thick fibroglandular tissue behind the areola is a common condition amongst men of all ages. Gynecomastia can add unwanted projection to the nipples, obscure the visible borders of the pectoralis muscles and even produce a female-like breast fold. In Vancouver men, gynecomastia is typically a benign condition of no medical concern; however, Dr. Reid will ask you a short series of screening questions to help rule out an underlying cause that needs treatment or further investigation.

GYNECOMASTIA

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

In most cases of gynecomastia there is no identifiable cause.

    • Body builders and thin fit men - In men with a low body mass index, gynecomastia usually presents with a firm lump of tissue behind the areola. This often adds prominence to the areola and interrupts the contour of the pectoralis major muscle.

    • Regular guys and seniors - Vancouver men with a normal or elevated body mass index have a more complex and variable presentation of their gynecomastia. Glandular tissue is usually present in higher quantities and extends well beyond the borders of the areola. In addition, there is excess subcutaneous tissue and a variable amount of excess skin. The shape of the pectoralis major muscle is obscured and the excess tissue contributes to a breast-like shape and submammary fold.

    • Men who have lost weight - Massive weight loss by any means contributes to the development of loose skin folds. In the chest area, this again creates a feminine submammary fold which often extends around to the upper back. There is a variable amount of glandular tissue and the nipples are often dilated.

TREATMENT

All procedures take place at a private surgical facility in Vancouver. These are day surgery procedures that are performed under a general anaesthetic. An overnight stay is not required.

    • Body builders and thin fit men - For men with a low body mass index, gynecomastia is corrected by surgical removal of the glandular tissue through a small incision concealed along the lower border of the areola.
    • Regular guys and seniors - For those Vancouver men with a normal, or elevated body mass index, the complete correction of gynecomastia often requires surgical excision of glandular tissue and liposuction to remove excess fat. Aditional steps may be required to adequately eliminate the submammary fold and redistribute excess skin.
    • Men who have lost weight - In men who have had a significant weight loss the correction of gynecomastia often requires the removal of excess skin from the chest and upper back. Although the resulting scar is long, this is a powerful procedure that allows for complete re-contouring of the chest.

RECOVERY

A carefully planned recovery helps to ensure good results and low complication rates. The required time off work varies from 1-3 weeks. Patients are asked to wear a compression garment for 3 weeks and restrict their activity and exercise for 4 weeks.
